BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--UC Santa Barbara swept CSU Bakersfield in a men's and women's swimming dual Saturday. The Gaucho men defeated the Roadrunners 184-115 while the UCSB women defeated CSUB 162-132.
"When you have a young team in the middle of a training camp, you need to be mentally and physically ready," said CSUB director of swimming Chris Hansen. "We are working on our mental aspect and learning how to swim while we are tired."
Winning for the CSUB men were Mitchell Huxhold (So., Escondido, Calif., San Paqual HS) who posted victories in the 500 (4:35.27) and the 1000 freestyle (9:36.56). Huxhold swam on the CSUB "B" 400 free relay which finished fourth. He recorded a time of :48.49 on his 100 leg.
Troy Neklason (So., Seattle, Wash., Aviaton HS) swept the diving events. Neklason posted a score of 264.95 in the 1m diving event. In 3m diving, Neklason earned a score of 290.00 for first place.
On the women's side, Lauren Kaufman (So.
Renton, Wash., TCU) won two individual events and was part of a CSUB relay that took home top honors. Kaufman won the 50 free in a time of :24.41 and the 100 free with a time of :53.15. Kaufman swam the third leg of the CSUB 400 relay that won the race by posting a mark of 3:35.72. Joining Kaufman on the winning relay were Ali Gillespie (So.
Huntington Beach, Calif., Oregon State), Louise Westergren (Sr., Malmo, Sweden (Pro Civitas HS), and Kelsey Lange (Fr., San Jose, Calif., Santa Teresa HS).
Michaela Paige (Fr., Lompoc, Calif., Cabrillo HS) won the 500 freestyle (5:03.31) and the 200 IM (2:10.78). Paige was second in the 200 butterfly (2:08.47). Nicolette Goncalves (Fr., Mississauga, Ontario (Erindale Secondary School) tallied a first place showing in the 100 butterfly (:58.51) while freshman Kooper Thomas (Bakersfield, Calif., Golden Valley HS) won her second diving event of the season, the 3m, with a score of 239.05.

The Roadrunner women return to the pool for a tri-dual with San Jose State and Northern Colorado Jan. 4 at the Hillman Aquatics Complex. The CSUB men are next in action Jan. 5 when UNLV comes to Bakesfield.
