BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - CSUB Head Men's Basketball Coach
Rod Barnes has announced the signing of Troynell Adams and Issiah Grayson to
National Letters of Intent to begin play for the Roadrunners next season. Along
with the signings, the Roadrunners' backcourt will be completed by the return
of last season's leading scorer Stephon Carter (Bakersfield, Calif, Garces
Memorial HS).
"It's a good combination of guys in the backcourt
starting with a veteran like Issiah who's played on some talented teams," said
Barnes. "I am really pleased with the backcourt, they are all versatile players
that can compliment each other."
Grayson, who will have two years of eligibility
remaining, comes to Bakersfield from the College of Southern Idaho, where the
Eagles won the NJCAA National Championship last season. Grayson was also rated a top-100
recruit out of Findlay Prep when he signed with Virginia Commonwealth back in
2009 where he appeared in 13 games. The Atlanta, Ga. native then transferred to
Southern Idaho, where his playing time was limited due to injury and a deep
Eagles bench. He managed to appear in 23 games for the national champions,
averaging three points and three assists per game for the 33-4 squad.
"He's played different roles from high school to
junior college and won a lot of basketball games in the process," Barnes said.
Adams arrives to CSUB from Carl Albert State (Junior)
College in Poteau, Okla. where he averaged 18.7 points and 5.7 rebounds a game
as a sophomore. A Chicago, Ill. native, Adams, shot 44% from the field during
the 2010-11 season on his way to being named second team All-Region II. As a
freshman, Adams averaged just under 14 points a game for Carl Albert. Adams, a
6-5 guard, played AAU ball with the Mac Irvin Fire, one of the top AAU teams in
the country.
"He's a very exciting type of player who has the
athleticism to jump and score over other guards," said Barnes. "He is long and
has great range which makes him a good rebounder and even better defender."
Meanwhile Carter's return means some familiarity for
'Runners fans as the junior guard led CSUB last season with 14.3 points and 3.3
assists per game along with four rebounds (2nd on team) per contest in 2010-11.
Carter also led the 'Runners in scoring eight times including two 30 points or
better performances and a season-high 32 points in a 82-77 win over San Jose
State on Nov. 24, 2010.
"Having a returner like Stephon who's proven he can
score at the Division I level puts him in a position so we can develop him at
the guard position and expand his skills as a guard as well," said Barnes.
Adams and Grayson join Ben Davis, Mo Hughley, Kwai
Pearson, Jordan Walker, Tyrone White, and Adam Young in the 2011-12 recruiting
class.
The official schedule has yet to be released but the
Roadrunners will open the season Saturday, Nov. 12 at Oregon State. CSUB's home
opener is slated for Nov. 19 against Pepperdine in the CSUB Icardo Center.
