BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-CSUB (13-19) and Santa Clara (5-12) split a doubleheader to open Pacific Coast Softball Conference action Apr. 9 at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
Santa Clara defeated CSUB 4-3 in the opener. Kelly Scribner's single in the top of the sixth scored Briana Knight for what proved to be the gamewinner. The Roadrunners loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but Sammy Rodriguez (Jr., Salinas, Calif., Salinas HS) popped out to second for the final out of the game.
Karissa Veiga (Fr., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) went 3-for-4 with a run to lead CSUB. Amy Ricciardi (Fr., Chino Hills, Calif., Ayala HS) was 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Rodriguez tossed a complete game seven hitter. Rodriguez struck out nine. Knight led SCU by going 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI's.
Ryane Petersen's (Sr., Fresno, Calif., Fresno State) grand slam home run in the bottom of the third gave the Roadrunners a 6-2 victory in the second game. CSUB scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first before the Broncos tied the score in the top of the second. Taking advantage of a Santa Clara error, the 'Runners loaded the bases for Petersen who smacked her fourth home run of the year for the gamewinning runs.
Chelsey Bell (Sr., Ridgecrest, Calif., Burroughs HS) went 2-for-3. Sarah Hoag (Fr., Salinas, Calif., Monterey HS) hurled a complete game four-hitter.
The PCSC series concludes Sunday at the Roadrunner Softball Complex with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
