BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--CSUB (8-18) and South Dakota (12-19) split a softball doubleheader Apr. 2 at the Roadrunner Softball Complex in CSUB's 'Strikeout Cancer' game to benefit breast cancer awareness and research.
The Roadrunners defeated the Coyotes 4-2 in the opener. The Coyotes led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth where CSUB posted six straight hits in a rally that scored all four of the Roadrunner runs.
Jamie Miller (Sr., Livermore, Calif., Ohlone College) went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Karissa Veiga (Fr., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Ashley Nahale (Jr., Fremont, Calif., Ohlone College), Amy Ricciardi (Fr., Chino Hills, Calif., Ayala HS) and Stefanie Frei (Sr., Valencia, Calif., Canyon HS) had RBI's for the Roadrunners. Sammy Rodriguez (Jr., Salinas, Calif., Salinas HS) tossed a complete game six hitter. Rodriguez struck out eight and walked only one batter.
South Dakota defeated CSUB 5-2 in the nightcap. The Coyotes led 3-0 in the fifth when Jazmine Lee (Fr., Garden Grove, Calif., Los Alamitos HS) smacked a two-run home run, her second of the season. The Coyotes added insurance runs in the seventh when Mel Johnson hit a two-run home run. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Roadrunners loaded the bases but Veiga popped out to end the game. Alexa Rudeen went 4-for-4. Lee had two hits.
