BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-Nikki Leon (Sr., Canyon Country, Calif., Canyon HS) led four CSUB women's basketball players in double figures as CSUB (17-11) defeated Cal State Northridge (4-23) 71-46 Feb. 23 in the Icardo Center. Leon scored a game high 15 points and grabbed a team high eight rebounds to pace the Roadrunners.
Amber Williams (So., Fontana, Calif., Etiwanda HS) posted 14 points while Breana Fields (Sr., Sacramento, Calif., San Jose State) charted 12. Kristine Herman (Jr., San Ramon, Calif., Florida Gulf Coast) scored 10.
CSUB got off to a slow start and trailed early on. The Roadrunners mounted a 13-2 run to end the first half to take a 13-point lead at halftime. CSUB held the Matadors to six field goals and 25-percent (6-of-24) shooting in the second half. The Roadrunners forced 24 turnovers and made 11 steals.
"Defense is key for us," said CSUB Head Coach Tim La Kose. "When we hold an opponent under 60, we are pretty darn good. We had a balanced attack and when everyone contributes, we have a number of players that can score in double digits. That Big win for us, they won three of their last four including the top team in the Big West. We expected a battle and that's what we got."
CSUB closes out the home slate Saturday afternoon when the Roadrunners host SIU-Edwardsville. The action gets underway at 1 p.m.
