FARMVILLE, Va.. — Senior guard Donavan Bragg (Inglewood/Serra HS) made his CSUB record 79th career start a big one Saturday afternoon, exploding for a career–high 30 points against fellow NCAA Division I Independent Longwood University. It wasn't enough, however, as the Lancers gained separation late in the first half and held CSUB at arm's length down the stretch in a 79–72 win at Willett Hall.
Bragg's big day came exactly one month after he scored a then career–high 27 points against UC Irvine. But aside from his 9–for–17 shooting performance, the rest of the Roadrunners remained ice-cold, combining to shoot just 24.5 percent (13–for–53).
CSUB (9–16 overall) scored a respectable 42 points in the first half. But Longwood (11–19) was red-hot, scorching the nets to the tune of 61.3 percent and 51 points in the period.
The 'Runners held their last lead at 28–27 with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half. They were still within two at 41–39 following a Bragg three–point play at the 4:09 mark. But the Lancers ended the half on an 8–2 run to take a 51–42 lead into the locker room. Longwood never led by more than 11, but CSUB never got closer than five in the second half.
In addition to Bragg, CSUB got 11 points from Alex Johnson (Toronto/Vaughan Road Academy) and a 10–point, 10–rebound double–double from Rashad Savage (Philadelphia/Odessa JC). Sophomore guard Stephon Carter (Garces HS) scored a season–low two points, but contributed a season–high 10 rebounds and a game–high six assists.
Only six Longwood players scored Saturday, but five of them reached double figures. Antwan Carter led the Lancers with 25 points and 15 rebounds.
CSUB returns to Bakersfield for its 2011 home finale Saturday against Seattle University.
