BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - San Jose State spoiled the CSUB softball
home openers, sweeping a pair of 3-1 decisions Friday at a very windy
Roadrunner Softball Complex. Wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour wreaked havoc,
turning long fly balls into infield pop ups and blowing dozens of seemingly
fair balls well out of play.
The
wind played a critical role in San Jose's winning rally in game one, pushing
Jessica Garcia's one-out fly ball to right just out of the reach of speedy Karissa Veiga (Hemet HS) but just inside
the right field line for a double. That opened the floodgates on a three-run Spartan
sixth.
CSUB
had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, when the 'Runners
parlayed singles by Myshayla Fryer (San
Diego/University HS) and Sammy Rodriguez
(Salinas HS) and two Spartan errors into one run and a bases loaded,
one-out rally. But San Jose starter Jennifer Ames coaxed a force at home and a
pop out from the next two batters to end the game. and
San
Jose once again jumped to a 3-0 lead before another 'Runner rally came up just
short in game two. CSUB loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, scoring
once before Spartan first baseman Alex Stange snared Amy Ricciardi's (Chino Hills/Ayala HS) wicked liner that seemed
destined for right field and at least a tie game.
Ricciardi
and Ryane Petersen (Fresno/Fresno State)
each doubled in game two while Jamie
Miller (Livermore/Ohlone College) added three hits to pace the CSUB
offense.
CSUB
and San Jose State conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday
at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
