SACRAMENTO, Calif.-Amber Williams (Jr., Fontana, Calif.,
Etiwanda HS) became the seventh CSU Bakersfield women's basketball player to
score 1,000 career points but Sacramento State (5-7) handed CSUB (3-11) a 87-84
defeat Tuesday night at the Hornets' Nest.
The game featured a series of runs that saw each team
take double-digit leads. CSUB led by eight points at the half and would take
its largest lead, 70-56 with 11:57 remaining. Sac State responded by scoring
the next 14 to tie the game a little over two minutes later. Williams scored seven
points including her 1000th and 1,001st points during a 11-0 CSUB rally to gave
the 'Runners a 81-70 lead.
Sac State closed to 84-83 with 1:41 remaining when Emily
Christensen connected on a three-point field goal. A CSUB turnover led to Fantasia Hillard's
go-ahead basket at the 43-second mark. Sacramento State was whistled for a foul
with 30.5 seconds remaining. On the ensuing CSUB possesion, Alle Moreno stole
the ball away from Williams with eight seconds to go and she was fouled. Moreno
made both free throws for the final 87-84. A CSUB three-point field goal at the
buzzer fell short.
Williams scored 21 points to raise her career total to
1,003. Kristine Herman (R-Sr., San Ramon, Calif., Florida Gulf Coast) led all
scorers with 23 points. Herman pulled in
12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Lauren Carter (R-Jr., Moorpark, Calif.,
Moorpark HS) also had a double-double as she scored 13 points and grabbed 10
rebounds.CSUB outrebounded Sac State 49-42, marking the first time in 14 games this season the Roadrunners have outrebounded an opponent.
"We made some mistakes and missed some layups," said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. "We didn't finish it off. We made some improvements on the glass and I was happy about the energy we brought to the game. We will get prepared to play Stanford. It is an exciting opportunity to play a top five program."
CSUB is at the No. 4 Cardinal Thursday afternoon for a 2 p.m.
