CORVALLIS, Ore.-If there is one thing CSU Bakersfield head
coach Rod Barnes can say about his 2011-12 squad, resiliency is not in short
order.
The Roadrunners displayed that several times on Saturday
afternoon battling back from 20 points down on several occasions but eventually
falling to host Oregon State 86-62.
CSUB trailed by 21 in the second half but went on a 9-3 run
to pull within 11 points with just over 13 minutes remaining. Following the
timeout however, CSUB turned the ball over on five consecutive trips up the
floor leading to Oregon State points and an eventual 24-point win for the
Beavers.
Both teams' defense created difficulties for the other with
the Roadrunners turning the ball over 27 times and Oregon State giving it up 22
times. The Beavers scored 28 points off CSUB turnovers, the Roadrunners scored
22 off Beaver miscues.
"We knew we were taking on a team that has played together
for a long time," said Barnes. "We did some things well like force 22
turnovers, but we know we have to take care of the basketball better in order
to be successful."
Issiah Grayson (Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Southern Idaho CC) led
the way with 15 points for the 'Runners on 6 of 8 from the field. Rashad Savage
(Sr., Philadelphia, Penn., Odessa CC) recorded his seventh double-double
as a Roadrunner scoring 11 points on 5 of 6 from the field and grabbing 11
rebounds as well. Savage narrowly missed his career-high of 14. Tyrone White
(Jr., Portland, Ore., North Idaho CC) added 9 points and 8 rebounds while
playing in his home state.
Oregon State was led by Ahmad Starks and Joe Burton's 16
points apiece while Jaren Cunningham added 15 for the Beavers.
The Roadrunners continue their season-opening road swing on
Wednesday as they head to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to take on Cal Poly at 7
P.M. The 'Runners open their home season on Saturday at the Icardo Center as
they host Pepperdine at 7 P.M.
