CSU Bakersfield Opens 2011-12 Season This Weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-CSU Bakersfield opens the 2011-12 women's basketball season this weekend with a pair of games. The Roadrunners will travel to Santa Clara Friday night for a 5 p.m. tip.  CSUB returns to the Icardo Center Sunday for the home opener against Southern Oregon at 7 p.m.

CSUB and Santa Clara are playing for the fifth time with the Roadrunners leading the all-time series 3-1. CSUB defeated the Broncos 66-53 last season in Bakersfield. Santa Clara opens the 2011-12 season against CSU Bakersfield. 11-19 last season, the Broncos were picked eighth in the preseason WCC poll. Santa Clara is led by returning All-Conference guards Alyssa Shoji, Meagan Fulps and Ricki Radanovich.


Sunday's game will count towards the standings for the Roadrunners, but it will serve as an exhibition for Southern Oregon. This is the first time that the two teams will be playing one another. The Raiders are 5-0 on the season. Southern Oregon is on a three-game, four-day road trip as the Raiders will play at Boise State Friday night before heading to Pacific Union on Monday.  Josi McDermott leads the team in scoring with a 13.0 ppg average.


CSU Bakersfield forced 42 turnovers as the Roadrunners defeated Fresno Pacific 111-66 in a women's basketball exhibition game Tuesday night.  CSUB made 27 steals and held the Sunbirds to 37% (20-of-54) shooting for the game.


The Roadrunners forced 23 turnovers in the first half as CSUB took a 54-32 lead into the halftime break. The Roadrunners, who only feature one player over six-foot tall on the active roster, outscored Fresno Pacific 66-20 in the paint and held a 25-4 advantage in second chance points.


Lauren Carter (R-Jr., Moorpark, Calif., Moorpark HS) went 7-of-15 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line to score a game high 23 points. Carter added seven rebounds in only 22 minutes on the floor.


Amber Williams (Jr., Fontana, Calif., Etiwanda HS) scored 20 points. Tyonna Outland (So., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) charted a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds. Cebrina Johnson (So., Corona, Calif., Santiago HS) and Kristine Herman (R-Sr., San Ramon, Calif., Florida Gulf Coast) each scored 13 points while Dajy Vines (R-Fr., Oxnard, Calif., Santa Clara HS) had 12.
