ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — What looked like a barn–burner early turned into an inferno by the end of the first half as New Mexico ran its home unbeaten streak to 15 games with a 102–62 win over CSUB Wednesday night at The Pit in Albuquerque.
Played in front of 14,045, the largest crowd ever to watch a CSUB sporting event, the game was tied at 20–20 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half before New Mexico caught fire. The Lobos used a 14–0 run to open a 34–20 lead and extended their advantage to 50–29 at halftime. The Lobos then opened the second half by making 10 of their first 14 shots from the field to put the game on ice.
“I thought we had a good stretch and established a good rhythm in the first half,” said CSUB Head Coach Keith Brown. “We got in some foul trouble and went to a zone and they knocked down every shot.”
CSUB got a nice effort from junior guard Robert Hayes (San Diego/San Francisco State) who converted 6–of–8 from the floor, including 4–of–5 from beyond the arc, as part of his season–high 16 points. Junior guard Alex Johnson (Toronto/Vaughan Road Academy) made three of his first four three–pointers to keep CSUB in the game early and finished with 12 points.
Alex Kirk made 11–of–13 from the floor as part of his game–high 31 points for UNM.
“This team (CSUB) has been resilient and will be resilient,” added Brown. “We'll have another day. We have an early flight back, we'll start school this week and we'll be ready to play at Pacific.”
The 'Runners will play at Pacific Tuesday, Jan. 11 before returning home to host Idaho on Saturday, Jan. 15.
