SANTA BARBARA, Calif--The CSUB Water Polo team went 1-1 on the first day of the UC Santa Barbara Invitational Jan. 29.

12 UC Santa Barbara handed the Roadrunners a 10-5 defeat to open the day. After a scoreless opening period, UC Santa Barbara outscored CSUB
6-2 in the second period to take control of the match.

Marquez (So., Visalia, Calif., El Diamante HS) paced the Roadrunners as she
recorded three goals. Tammy Barksdale (Sr., Atascadero, Calif. (Cuesta College) and Taylor Hanson (Fr., Modesto, Calif., Johansen HS) also scored goals for the Roadrunners.
Jessica Browning (So., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS), Bianca Adams (Fr., Ontario, Calif., St. Lucy's Priory HS), and Sam Sheed (So., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) each drew two ejections. Hanson made two blocks in the field. Sophomore goalie Megan Pezzolla (Upland, Calif., Bonita HS) made nine blocks and charted six steals.
Saturday's nightcap saw the Roadrunners face Vangaurd under the lights and come away with a 20-4 victory. Browning and Paige Tsuruda (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii, Word of Life Academy)
each scored five goals in the rout. Haylie Glandon (So., Fresno, Calif., Clovis West HS) and Sierra Peltcher (Jr., Santa Maria, Calif., Saint Joseph HS) both posted two goals for CSUB.
Hanson and Browning both recorded three steals in the field. Pezzola and Chiyeko Morisaki (Fr., Lodi, Calif., Tokay HS) combined for four blocks in goal.
"I thought we improved on some of the mistakes we made during the opening weekend," said CSUB Head Coach Jason Gall. "However we made a couple of mental mistakes in the second quarter against Santa Barbara that cost us. It was good to get a win against Vanguard. It was a good defensive effort and we got good contributions from our freshman. We hope to use this game to get our offense going."
The tournament resumes Sunday when CSUB faces Concordia-Irvine at 9:10 a.m. and No. 7 Michigan at 12:40 p.m.
