BERKELEY, Calif. – The CSUB water polo team dropped a pair of matches to No. 3 Cal, 20–3, and No. 17 UC Davis, 13–3, at the California Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. at the Spieker Aquatics Complex on Saturday.
In the first match of the day, the California Bears jumped out to a quick lead early on as they scored six goals in the opening period. The Bears would add seven more unanswered goals to increase their lead to 13–0 before CSUB was able to find the back of the net with 33 seconds remaining in the third period. The Roadrunners would add two goals in the final period, however, Cal was able to add seven more to its total, defeating the 'Runners 20–3. Pahoa and two meter sophomore Jessica Browning each drew two ejections in the match.
CSUB's second match of the day versus UC Davis was a similar story as the Aggies managed to score three goals in the first period to gain an early lead. The Roadrunners got on the board in the second period but Davis was able to put away five more goals. CSUB would score a goal in each of the last two periods while the Aggies scored five more times to earn a 13–3 victory. Senior utility player Tammy Barksdale drew three ejections in the match while freshman Bianca Adams drew two.
Sophomore goalie Megan Pezzolla finished with five saves against both Cal and UC Davis while freshman goalie Chiyeko Morisaki, who played the first quarter of her career against UC Davis, finished with one.
Despite the Roadrunners 0–2 start to the 2011 season, head coach Jason Gall is very optimistic about what he saw in the pool on Saturday. “We had a lot of opportunities today we just didn't convert,” said Gall.
“There are definitely positives to take from the day as we showed we are capable of playing at the level we want to be at. We need to continue to develop our team chemistry and continue to work together. We worked very hard today.”
No. 20 CSUB travels to Santa Barbara, Calif. next weekend to compete in the UC Santa Barbara Tournament, Jan. 29–30. The 'Runners will face No. 12 UC Santa Barbara and Vanguard on Saturday and Concordia and No. 8 Michigan on Sunday.
