No. 14 Oregon State Defeats CSUB 24-10 In Pac 10 Action

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -No. 14 Oregon State (7-3-2, 1-0-1 Pac-10) defeated CSUB (2-3, 1-1 Pac-10) 24-10 in Pac-10 Conference wrestling action Sunday afternoon in the Icardo Center.

The dual began at heavyweight where the Beavers' Clayton Jack took down David Morgan (R-Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) with 17 seconds to go in overtime to post a 3-1 victory. Tyler Iwamura (R-So., San Diego, Calif., Santa Fe Christian HS) gave the Roadrunners the lead at 4-3 when he recorded a 13-4 major decision at 125 pounds. A Garrett Drucker 15-3 major decision over Jose Mendoza (R-Fr., Selma, Calif., Selma HS) returned the advantage to Oregon State 7-4.

Mike Mangrum increased the Beavers' lead with a 9-4 victory over Elijah Nacita (R-Sr., Bakersfield HS) in their 141-pound contests. In a rematch from the Dec. 3 Cliff Keen Invitational, Scott Sakaguchi defeated John Cardenas (Sr., Brawley, Calif., Brawley Union HS) 6-1 at 149 pounds.

Alex Elder earned a 7-2 decision over Andrew Balch (R-So., Clovis, Calif., Buchanan HS) in the 157-pound match while Jon Brascetta won 8-5 over Trevor Hall (Sr., Battle Ground, Wash., Battle Ground HS) at 165.

Colby Covington, who is ranked No. 7 in all six Division I Wrestling polls at 174 pounds, defeated Joey Granata (R-Sr., Oceanside, Calif., Fallbrook HS) by technical fall, 22-7.

The Roadrunners won the final two matches as unranked Troy Goodban (R-Sr., Bellflower, Calif., Bellflower HS)
upset No. 16 Bryce Arand 8-6 at 184 while Riley Orozco (R-Sr., Fallon, Nev., Churchill County HS) earned a 7-3 win over Chad Hanke at 197.

"It was a great win for Tyler as he beat a guy that was ranked ahead of him," said CSUB Head Coach Mike Mendoza. "This is Troy's first year as a starter and the more matches he gets under his belt, the more he improves and the more confidence he gains. Riley pinned Hanke in their previous match, but he took a shot to the mouth that cracked a tooth, so that probably set him back a bit during today's match. But he overcame that and pulled out the win."

The Roadrunners return to the mats Friday, Jan. 21 when they travel to Arizona State for a 7 p.m. (MST) Pac-10 dual.
