SEATTLE – The University of Idaho women's soccer team scored goals late in each half to earn a 2–0 victory over CSUB at the Redhawk Invitational Sunday afternoon at Championship Field on the Seattle University campus.
The loss snaps CSUB's (3–4–3 overall) four–match unbeaten streak. It was the Roadrunners' longest at the NCAA Division I level and the longest for the program overall since the 2000 team opened 7–0–1 en route to a CCAA Central Division title.
“The team that won today deserved to win,” said CSUB Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. “Idaho really came out and capitalized on some poor marking. It was not one of our better games.”
Idaho (8–3–0) opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Melissa Canite headed home a Chelsea Small cross. The Vandals iced the match nine minutes from time when Erica Hart tucked a Jill Flockhart helper inside the left post.
The Roadrunners had a couple of chances to open the scoring early but couldn't sufficiently test Idaho goalkeeper Liz Boyden. Freshman forward Tyler Shirk had a chance to equalize for CSUB in the second half, but Boyden made a one–on–one save to deny the Roadrunners' best chance.
“We had a couple of early chances, and had we finished one of them we may have gotten ourselves in the game,” Van Dyke added. “On the bright side, we're are heading home after six games on the road.”
The 'Runners will take a week off before returning to action on the Main Soccer Field when Pepperdine University visits Oct. 3 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
