Runners Can't Sustain Fast Start In Loss At Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Cal Poly volleyball team continued to make a push towards a return to the top 25, withstanding a hot start by CSUB before rolling late in a 25-22, 25-8, 25-15 win Sunday afternoon in Mott Gym.

CSUB hit a sizzling .448 in the first set, actually out-hitting the host Mustangs by 73 points, but three Cal Poly service aces in the set proved the difference. It marked the first time at the NCAA Division I level that the Roadrunners hit .400 or better in a set and lost (32-1).

Cal Poly jumped out to leads of 11-0 in the second set and 9-2 in the third set and never looked back to close out the sweep.

Head Coach John Price got all 12 of his healthy player into the match Sunday, with seven different players registering kills. Outside hitters Lindy DeGeare (Stockdale HS) and Tika Smith (Sweetwater, Texas/Sweetwater HS) led the offense with six kills apiece. Senior libero Lindsay Toone (Liberty HS) led the defense with 11 digs.

CSUB returns home to host 26th ranked Saint Mary's College Friday (Sept. 24) at 7 p.m. in the Icardo Center.
