Gause?s Heroics Save Draw For Roadrunners

DAVIS, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield junior goalkeeper Kym Gause (Manteca, Calif./Modesto JC) stretched for a spectacular penalty kick save midway through the second half to secure a 1-1 draw at UC Davis on Friday night to spoil the Aggies' home opener.

Gause might have allowed an early goal on a brilliant 25-yard blast by UC Davis' Allison Kelly, but she was otherwise brilliant. She racked up a career-high 10 saves punctuated by the sprawling penalty kick stop to keep the match level at 1-1.

“The shot was high and to the left,” CSUB coach Nicole Van Dyke said. “Kim dove and made a first-time save. It was a great save.”

With the draw, CSUB moved to 1-3-2 on the season. UC Davis is 1-2-1.

“It's a good result,” Van Dyke said. “It was Davis' home opener. They have one win so I'm sure they were looking for a result as well. But it was good that we conceded early and were able to come back.”

The early Aggie goal came in the 13th minute and it was already UC Davis' fifth shot of the match. That goal capped a frantic first 13 minutes that also featured three CSUB shots and two Roadrunner corner kicks, but it was the Aggies with the early advantage.

But CSUB dominated the remainder of the first half, outshooting UCD 7-2 the rest of the way. The Roadrunners were rewarded for their fine play when Tara Corcoran (La Verne, Calif./Cerritos College) continued to establish herself as a threat in the air by heading in a cross from Faith Perry (Glendora, Calif./Glendora HS) to level the scoreline.

CSUB kept the pressure on and appeared to take the lead just minutes after the goal, but it was disallowed due to offside.

While regulation might have been played somewhat even, the overtime periods were all UC Davis. The Aggies outshot CSUB 9-0 in the extra 20 minutes, but Gause saved the day with three overtime saves and UCD sent the ball wide the other six times.

The Roadrunners remain in Northern California for a Sunday afternoon match at Saint Mary's in Moraga at 1 p.m. Saint Mary's improved to 6-0-0 Friday afternoon with a 1-0 win against Long Beach State and has outscored its opponents 17-3 so far this season.
