Shirk?s Nets First Goal in Draw with Eagles

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Freshman Tyler Shirk (Monrovia HS) netter her first collegiate goal Friday evening as the CSUB women's soccer team tied with the Eastern Washington Eagles, 1–1, on the Main Soccer Field. After falling behind 1–0, Shrik's strike came just under five minutes after the halftime break to even the score where it remained for the duration.

The tie moves the Roadrunners to 0–1–1 on the year while Friday served as Eastern Washington's season opener (0–0–1).

Eastern Washington's Sara Bryne took a throw in along the near sideline and found a streaking Whitney Brannan in the 20th minute of action. Brannan was able to turn the corner and raced at CSUB goalkeeper Kym Gause (Manteca, Calif./Modesto JC) up the endline. Brannan's shot cleared Gause's outstreached reach to put Eastern Washington up, 1–0.

In the 50th minute, junior Jamie Havelin (Saugus HS) took a throw in and found classmate Veronica Ramos (Walnut HS) at the top of the box. Ramos controlled the ball and send a crossing pass to the far post where Shirk was waiting. A quick one–touch volley made its way past Eagle goalkeeper Jamie Walker to even the score up.

Despite pushing forward late, CSUB was unable to find the winning touch in regulation or in either overtime periods. Eastern Washington's leading scorer from 2009, Brittany Sparks, found herself alone in the 'Runner backfield with time winding down but the effort was canceled out by Gause who covered up a long touch from the striker.

Throughout the game, the Roadrunners put constant pressure on the Eagle defense, outshooting EWU 27–7 on the evening while holding an 11–3 advantage in corner kicks. Gause finished with three saves for the 'Runners on the evening.

CSUB continues its homestand on Sunday against Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m. on the Main Soccer field.
