SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team officially began its 2010 campaign with a 2–0 loss Sunday afternoon to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at Harder Stadium. The Roadrunners (0–1–0) had their game Friday evening suspended which marked Sunday's contest against the Gauchos (2–0–0) as the official start to the season.
Despite a steady increase in physical play during the first half, neither team was able to capitalize and pull ahead as the score remained 0–0 after the first 45.
Early in the second half, junior Maritza Rumbo (Anaheim/Katella HS) played a through ball to sophomore Sam Peña (Bakersfield HS) that forced UCSB's goalkeeper to come out to play the ball. Peña raced down the ball but was just a split second late as the ball was cleared out of the zone nearly 10 yeards in front of the UCSB box.
In the 60th minute, UCSB scored to break the tie on a crossing pass from Kailyn Kugler that Erica Seidman redirected in from 12 yards out. Moments following UCSB's opening strike, Peña again found herself in a scoring opportunity only to watch the ball sail just wide of the near post.
The Gauchos' second goal came off a rebounded header that Alissa Sanchez followed into the net in the 80th minute.
Junior Kym Gause (Manteca/Modesto JC) had three saves for the Roadrunners and the team was credited with two including a nice play from senior Leanne Tucker (Cambridge, England) in the final minutes on the goal line. Also contributing on defense was junior Breanna Flores (Tulare Union HS), who provided valuable minutes after being subbed in during the first half.
"I thought we had good spirit and battled hard today," says Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. "A lot of kids stepped up and competed. I am very proud of their first road game of the year."
CSUB returns home on Friday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. against Eastern Washington University on the Main Soccer field.
