Zardes Scores But Mustangs Take Exhibition Opener

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Freshman Gyasi Zardes (Hawthorne/Leuzinger HS) scored in the 26th minute but The Master's College answered with a pair of goals to take an exhibition contest from the CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team on Saturday evening, 2–1, on the Main Soccer Field.

After a pass from senior Peter Carlson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Sven Eriksson Gymnasiet) was misplayed in the midfield by the Mustangs, sophomore forward Evan Fassler (Carnation, Wash./Cedarcrest HS) was able to send the ball forward to a streaking Zardes who went one v. one with the keeper and beat him to the near post.

The Master's College responded just four minutes later in the 30th with a goal by Kevin Schuenmann who scored on a header. The Mustangs pulled ahead in the 34th minute with a goal by Andrew Totaro.

The Roadrunners outshot the Mustangs 15–10 on the evening and earned five corner kicks to TMC's two. Sophomore Shane Ascheri started in goal for CSUB and had a pair of saves. Classmate Eric Shannon came in during the second half and also made a pair of saves. The Mustangs' keeper Andrew Bussell had nine saves.

CSUB continues its preseason schedule with a pair of games next week beginning with the Mexico U–20 National Team on Tuesday. Trinity Western University visits on Wednesday. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. on the Main Soccer Field.
