BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Saint Mary's College swept Saturday's
doubleheader at CSUB, moving two steps closer to its first Pacific Coast
Softball Conference title, winning 12-10 and 7-4 at the Roadrunner Softball
Complex.
But
the sweep didn't slow the chase for the Roadrunner single season home run
record. In fact the race heated up even more. Senior second baseman Kristen Archuleta (Hollister/San Benito HS)
tied first baseman Ryane Petersen
(Fresno/Fresno State) by hitting her 11th home run of the season
in game one. But Petersen had the last laugh, for a day at least, tying
Christie Hill's school record with her 12th homer of 2010 in the
seventh inning of game two.
Both
players will have one more chance to claim the record for their own Sunday when
CSUB closes the season with another doubleheader against Saint Mary's.
Saint
Mary's took advantage of its own power surge to complete Saturday's sweep. The
Gaels (27-19, 13-3 PCSC) needed just one home run to score 12 runs in a wild
game one. They then used five homers to score seven runs in game two. Those
five were a CSUB opponent record and the third most in a game in PCSC history.
Game
one was a wild affair with the lead changing hands five times. Saint Mary's
used four soft singles, two walks and an error to score four times in the top
of the first. But three walks, a Petersen RBI double and Archuleta's long ball
put the Roadrunners back on top 5-4 by the end of the first.
Back-to-back
doubles by Rebecca Sabatini and Kayla Gonzales helped the Gaels retake the lead
with two second inning runs before CSUB answered with two in the second, one in
the third and two more in the fourth as the Roadrunners built a 10-7 lead.
That
lead evaporated in the fifth when the opportunistic Gaels manufactured four
runs on three hits. Michelle Mounts' RBI groundout scored Whitney Heuser with
what proved to be the game winner.
Maryanne
Cronin added a solo shot in the seventh for a bit of insurance. That was more
than enough for reliever Jessica Lemmon, who settled down after a shaky start
to retire the final eight 'Runners for her fourth win of the season.
Saint
Mary's built a 4-1 lead thanks to two solo shots and one two-run homer in game
two. Two more solo shots in the seventh helped stretch the lead to 7-1 before
the 'Runners rallied in their final at bats. Petersen capped the three-run
rally with her record tying home run, a two-run shot to left center.
Six
'Runners hit safely in both games Saturday. Petersen led the way with a pair of
extra base hits and three RBIs. Freshman outfielder Karlee Rodgers (Clovis West HS) had a season-high three RBIs in
game one.
Michelle
Mounts led Saint Mary's with five hits Saturday. Heuser hit two homers in game
two while Cronin hit home runs in both games, both seventh-inning solo shots.
