Top Seed Lions Defeat Roadrunners in WWPA Semifinals

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSUB water polo team fell to the top-seeded Loyola Marymount Lions 18-5 Saturday in the semifinal round of the 2010 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship Tournament at the Hillman Aquatic Center. The No. 4 seeded Roadrunners (17-20) got four goals from first-team All-WWPA performer Alyson Moss.

All-freshman performer Megan Pezzolla had five blocks and sophomore Megan Wetherbee had two saves.

After falling behind 4-0 in the first, CSUB responded with three goals from Moss in the second to pull within two, 3-5, midway through the quarter. But a seven-goal outburst from LMU in the third quarter ended any comeback hopes for the Roadrunners. Moss added her fourth in the third and senior Brittany Berry scored in the fourth.

Last season, CSUB captured its highest WWPA finish with a third-place showing in Santa Clara, Calif. The Roadrunners will look to repeat that feat tomorrow as they take on the No. 6 seed Colorado State at 1:30 p.m. in the consolation finals match. LMU will face the No. 2 seed UC San Diego Tritons in the championship match at 3 p.m.
