BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Continuing its trend of solid performance on the mat and in the classroom, the CSUB wrestling team placed five student-athletes in the 2010 Pac-10 Conference Wrestling All-Academic teams, announced by Commissioner Larry Scott. Tyler Iwamura, Elijah Nacita and Riley Orozco were all named to the first team while Joey Granata and Mike Larson earned second team honors.
Twenty total wrestlers from the eight competing institutions where named to the first and second teams, let by five each from CSUB and Stanford. To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
Iwamura, a redshirt freshman, is a physical education and kinesiology major with a 3.54 cumulative GPA. He went 23-10 at 125 pounds this season. Nacita is a junior business administration major with a 3.28 cumulative GPA. Competing at 141 pounds, he compiled a 19-13 record, including a fourth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships and a second consecutive NCAA Championships appearance.
Orozco is a junior criminal justice major with a 3.06 cumulative GPA. The 197-pounder garnered his first Pac-10 title this past season, and made his third NCAA Championships appearance before concluding the season with a 23-8 overall record.
Granata is a junior history major with a 3.02 cumulative GPA. He went 20-11 on the season and placed fifth at the Pac-10 Championships. Larson, a redshirt freshman, is a physical education and kinesiology major with a 3.02 cumulative GPA. He placed second at his first Pac-10 Championships at 184-pounds, earning an NCAA Championships bid and finishing the season 24-16.
