Seniors Power No. 18 Water Polo to Conference Win


BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The No. 18 CSUB water polo team picked up an important WWPA victory Sunday afternoon, handling the Chapman Panthers 18-5 in the second day of the Roadrunner Invitational. Every member of the senior class scored at least one goal in the win as the 'Runners celebrated senior day prior to the start of the contest. The big conference win was a nice rebound to a disappointing 9-7 setback earlier in the day to Brown. With the day split, CSUB is now 13-16 overall and 5-3 in WWPA play.

Brown scored the first four goals of the contest before the Roadrunners were able to respond midway through the second quarter. Senior Alyson Moss scored three times in the second quarter and classmate Becky Seelos added one as CSUB pulled to within three at halftime, 7-4. Each team tallied a goal in the third quarter and CSUB scored the final two goals of the contest but the initial lead was too much to overcome. Moss finished with four goals and Seelos had two. Senior C.J. Longeuay added one as time expired in the fourth quarter. In goal, freshman Megan Pezzolla had 12 blocks.

It was a different tale against Chapman as CSUB came out of the gates firing, jumping to an early 4-0 lead. CSUB would score 10 of the game's first 12 goals to hold a 10-2 lead at the half. With some players seeing some extra playing time with the score cushion, the Roadrunners continued to execute effectively, adding eight more goals in the final two quarters to win going away, 18-5. Head Coach Jason Gall allowed his five-member senior class to finish the game in the field. With time winding down, Longeuay found the back of the net to give every senior member a goal on the game.

In all, 13 Roadrunners found the back of the net. Junior Tammy Barksdale, Moss, senior Brittany Berry, freshman Kelsey Davidson, and freshman Haylie Glandon each tallied a pair of goals while senior Jessica Manke, sophomore Malia Pahoa, Seelos, sophomore Kellie Goodwin, Longeuay, freshman Sam Shead, freshman Jessica Browning and junior Bonny Bordwell each had one goal. Pezzolla had one block and sophomore Megan Wetherbee had three blocks.

Prior to the contest, Moss, Longeuay, Manke, Berry and Seelos were honored as a part of the senior day festivities.

An interesting test awaits the Roadrunners next week as CSUB heads to Los Angeles to take on national power USC at noon on Saturday, Apr. 3.
