BAKERSFIELD,
Calif. - The battle of the two teams that dominated NCAA Division II softball
in the 1980's end in a draw Saturday afternoon as CSUB and Cal State Northridge
split a doubleheader at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
Northridge took
game one 2-0 behind a three-hit shutout from Hannah Fraijo. Home runs by Kristen Archuleta (Hollister/San Benito HS) and Ryan
Petersen (Fresno/Fresno State) powered
CSUB to a 7-3 win in the nightcap.
Although they
have not played often since Northridge made the jump to NCAA Division I status
in 1991, the game two win for CSUB (10-11 overall) was its first over the
Matadors (14-16) since the 1990 NCAA Division II championship game.
Senior third
baseman Kelli Bailey (Rodeo/John Swett HS)
ran her hitting streak to 11 by hitting safely in both games. But several other
Roadrunners came up with the big hits in the game two win. Freshman outfielder Emily Bliss (Chaminade Prep) a Northridge
native, opened the CSUB scoring with a clutch two-out single in the fourth
inning.
Archuleta gave
CSUB the lead with her third home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the
fifth. Petersen then put the game away but drilling her PCSC-leading fifth
homer of the season to deep leftcenter to account for the final three runs.
For a while, it
looked as if CSUB might not score Saturday. Fraijo was in control for most of
the afternoon, becoming the first pitcher to shut out the 'Runners since Mar.
23, 2009. When the 'Runners did hit her hard, she received outstanding defense,
especially from leftfielder Jennifer Mosier, who single-handedly killed several
CSUB rallies with excellent glove work.
Sophomore pitcher
Sammy Rodriguez (Salinas HS) pitched
around control problems to shutout the Matadors for five innings. But two
singles, two walks and a wild pitch resulted in the only two runs of the game
in the sixth inning.
Amanda
Pitzenberger continued to flummox the 'Runner bats in game two, tossing three
scoreless innings as Northridge built a 3-0 lead. But the scoreless streak
ended in the fourth inning when Danielle Lyman (Moreno Valley/Canyon Springs
HS) hit a screaming liner over Mosier's
head. The junior leftfielder twisted around as she raced back, but for the
first time all day, couldn't make the highlight reel play.
With the bases
loaded and two outs, Bliss fouled off several pitches before singling sharply
up the middle to drive in the first run. Freshman Karlee Rodgers (Clovis
West HS) then singled off the glove of
third baseman Tracy Allen to bring home Lyman and make it a 3-2 game.
Petersen led off
the fifth with a double against relief pitcher Mia Pagano. Two batters later,
Archuleta took Pagano deep to give CSUB its first lead of the day. A hit batter
and a walk set the table for Petersen in the sixth, and she delivered to smooth
the way for Shawna Truan's (McArthur/Fall River HS) third win of the season.
CSUB will close
its brief two-day homestand Sunday when it hosts fifth-ranked UCLA in a
doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. More than 500 tickets have already been sold,
ensuring that it will be the highest attendance ever for a regular season game
in 'Runner softball history.
