SANTA
BARBARA, Calif. - On a night in which most in Santa Barbara were celebrating
UCSB men's basketball return to the NCAA Tournament, the CSUB softball team
celebrated a sweep of the Gauchos, 4-3 and 5-0, on UCSB's Campus Diamond.
Roadrunner
pitching did not allow an earned run Saturday. Game one starter Sammy Rodriguez (Salinas HS) fanned five Gauchos against no walks while pitching around six
CSUB errors. In the nightcap Shawna Truan (McArthur/Fall River HS) threw her second shutout
of the season.
CSUB
(9-9 overall) used one big inning to overcome some shaky defense in the opener.
The Roadrunners put up four runs in the fourth inning, and that turned out to
be just enough. Jamiey Kleinsmith's (Santa Maria/College of the Sequoias) two-run double was the big
blow.
But
the 'Runner defense committed three errors in the sixth inning to allow three
unearned runs as UCSB (7-16) scratched its way back into the game. They made
two more errors in the seventh as UCSB put the tying and winning runs into
scoring position before Rodriguez induced a comebacker to end the game.
Senior
first baseman Ryane Petersen (Fresno/Fresno State) swung the big bat in game
two, driving in all five runs. Her five RBIs were a career high and one off the
CSUB single game record of six set twice previously.
Petersen
opened the CSUB ledger with a two-run single in the bottom of the first.
Following a Karleee Rodgers (Clovis West HS) double and a Heather Veitch
(Simi Valley/Royal HS) single in the fifth, Petersen cleared the bases with her
fourth homerun of the season.
UCSB
threatened early against Truan, loading the bases with one out in the first
inning. But Truan made two big pitches, first getting a comebacker from Gaucho
catcher Lainey DePompa, allowing her to throw out Brooke Putich. She then got
Katie McWhirter on a second consecutive comebacker to end the threat.
The
Gauchos had one last chance to get into the game in the fifth, loading the
bases with nobody out. This time, Truan got Putich to ground into a force play
at the plate before coaxing No. 3 hitter Keilani Jennings to hit into a 4-3
double play.
For
the day, senior third baseman Kelli Bailey (Rodeo/John Swett HS) went 2-for-3 in both games.
Veitch had one hit in each game to raise her current hitting streak to a
career-high 12 games. Senior second baseman Kristin Archuleta (Hollister/San
Benito HS)
had a single in game one to raise her hitting streak to 15 games before going
0-for-3 in the nightcap.
CSUB
closes its six-game road trip Sunday morning with a single game at Big West
Conference preseason favorite Cal Poly. The 'Runners return home next weekend
to host Cal State Northridge (Mar. 20) and UCLA (Mar. 22).
