HOUSTON — The CSUB women's swimming and diving team had a stellar second night in the pool at the 2010 Conference USA Championships in Houston, capping the session with a program record in the 400 free relay.
The relay team of Stephanie Donnelly, Rachel Holm, Louise Westergren and Rachel McCall placed fifth in the field of nine in 3:50.74, besting the previous CSUB top time of 3:54.74 set in 2003.
The solid finish helped the Roadrunners finish the night in sixth place in the team standings with 116 points. Southern Methodist leads the field with 270 points, followed by Rice (206 points) in second, Houston (205 points) in third, East Carolina (189 points) in fourth and North Dakota (123 points) in fifth.
Also breaking into the CSUB all-time top five were Rachel McCall and Louise Westergren in the 50 free. McCall went 23.41 in her preliminary heat to earn a spot in the championship finals, then swam a 23.23, the second fastest time in CSUB history, to place fifth overall. Westergren went 23.83 in the morning to earn a spot in the consolation finals, then touched in 23.86 to place fifth in her heat and 13th overall. Her preliminary time is now the fourth fastest in CSUB history.
In the three-meter springboard diving event, Victoria Kreutz scored 260.25 in the preliminary round, then tallied a season-best 291.55 to place sixth in the field of 21. Hannah Yoder narrowly missed the finals cut with a season-best score of 232.35.
The Roadrunners also got a slew of personal best times in the 500 free, led by Olivia Ramos. The freshman shaved nearly 12 seconds off her previous career best, coming up just shy of making the consolation finals. Bonny Bordwell cut more than 20 seconds off her best time, swimming a 5:13.99 in her preliminary heat. Renee Roy (5:16.75) and Macie Hammond (5:32.47) also all turned in career best times.
“Olivia had a great swim and Rachel (McCall's 50 free) time was right off an NCAA 'B' cut,” said Head Coach Pat Skehan. “We are right int he middle of the pack in team hunt, which is very exciting. We are swimming really well.”
Friday's slate consists of the 200 free relay, the 400 IM, the 100 fly, the 200 free, the 100 breast, the 100 back and women's one-meter diving.
