SAN
JOSE, Calif. - The CSUB softball team opened its four-game series at San Jose
State by dropping a pair of one-run decisions Friday afternoon. San Jose State
came from behind twice to take the opener, 5-4, in 10 innings, before holding
off a late Roadrunner rally to win the nightcap by an identical 5-4 margin.
Junior
Ryan Petersen (Fresno/Fresno State) hit her second homerun of the season to highlight
the 10-hit Roadrunner attack in the first game. She also came in to pitch two
scoreless innings of relief to give the Roadrunners a chance to come back in
game two.
Senior
second baseman Kristen Archuleta (Hollister/San Benito HS) hits safely in both games,
finishing the doubleheader 3-for-7 with two runs and two RBIs. Senior third
baseman Kelli Bailey (Rodeo/John Swett HS) also had one hit in both games.
RBI
singles by Petersen and freshman Karlee Rodgers (Clovis West HS) staked the 'Runners to an
early 2-1 lead in the opener. After San Jose cut the lead in half, Petersen
restored the two-run advantage with a one-out solo shot in the top of the
sixth. But a pair of CSUB errors gifted the Spartans two runs in the bottom of
the sixth, ultimately forcing extra innings.
A
two-out double by Bailey set the stage for Danielle Lyman (Moreno
Valley/Canyon Springs HS) to drive home what looked like the game-winner in the eighth,
but another error and another unearned run allowed the Spartans to tie it at
4-4.
Singles
by Heather Veitch (Simi Valley/Royal HS) and Archuleta put 'Runners on first and
third with one out in the ninth, but CSUB could bring them home. Finally,
Spartan cleanup hitter Brittany McConnell ended the game with a one-out homer
in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Stefani
Frei's (Valencia./Canyon Country HS) two-run single in the second inning helped offset
a three-run Spartan first in the nightcap. But San Jose touched up CSUB starter
Katie Chavez (Fresno/Edison HS) for 10 hits in four innings. Tack on two more CSUB
errors and the Spartans jumped to a 5-2 lead after four.
The
'Runners battled back to make things interesting. Archuleta's two-out, two-run
single in the sixth inning made it 5-4. Jamie Miller (Livermore/Ohlone
College) hit
a one-out single in the seventh before advancing to third base on a wild pitch
and a ground out, but Spartan reliever Jaclyn Imhof stranded her there to earn
the save.
CSUB
and San Jose State will conclude their four-game series Saturday with another doubleheader
in San Jose. The 'Runners will return to Bakersfield for their 2010 home opener
Friday, Feb. 26 against Utah Valley University.
