LAS
VEGAS, Nev. - 2009 NCAA Tournament qualifier Long Beach State jumped ahead with
a big early inning then held off a late CSUB rally for an 8-5 victory as both
teams concluded play at the Sportco Kickoff Classic Sunday afternoon at Eller
Media Field on the campus of UNLV.
Long
Beach (2-2 overall) parlayed two walks, a hit batter and a two-out infield
single into one second-inning run before Nalani St. Germain ripped a grand slam
to cap a two-hit, five-run rally. CSUB nearly erased that deficit with a
furious comeback that brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the
seventh inning, before falling just short.
Junior
outfielder Stefanie Frei (Valencia/Canyon Country HS) led the way for CSUB,
rapping out two hits, including an RBI single in the seventh. She also doubled
and came home on a wild pitch to open the CSUB ledger in the fourth inning.
Senior third baseman Kelli Bailey (Rodeo/John Swett HS) added a two-run single to
highlight the eight-hit Roadrunner attack.
CSUB
finished its tough opening weekend with a 1-4 record. The Roadrunners return to
California to play a four-game series at San Jose State beginning Friday (Feb.
19). They return to Bakersfield for their home-opening series against Utah
Valley University Feb. 27-28.
