BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Despite a furious second half rally by the Roadrunners, the CSUB women's basketball team was unable to pull ahead as it dropped a 75–67 decision to Fresno State on Wednesday night.
Fresno State held CSUB scoreless through the first four minutes of the game until junior guard Kristine Herman (San Ramon, Calif./Florida Gulf Coast) knocked down a jumper in her first start of the season to get the 'Runners on the board. The Bulldogs used a 10–3 run to gain a seven–point lead early on, however, senior forward Tamiko Davis (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) scored 6 points over the next four minutes to keep the 'Runners within reach. After being tied with eight minutes to go in the first half, Fresno State went on a 16–5 run to take a 16–point lead into the break.
The second half was a different story for the 'Runners and after trailing by 19 points, thanks to a Fresno State trey in its first possession, CSUB cut the Bulldogs' lead down to three with a little over 10 minutes to play in the game. Sophomore guard Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) and junior forward Jana Smith (Tehachapi, Calif./Tehachapi HS) combined to score 14 points over the next five minutes to make it a one–point game.
Over the final three minutes, Fresno State knocked down two from behind the arc and made six–consecutive free throws to increase its lead just out of CSUB's reach. Despite a three–point play from senior guard Nikki Leon (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon HS) in the final minute, Fresno State handed the 'Runners their first loss at home this season.
Three Roadrunners finished the night in double–figure scoring, including Williams (team–high 17 points), Herman (14) and Davis. Leon was just shy of a double–double as she finished with nine points and a team–leading 13 rebounds.
CSUB hits the road once again as it travels to Oxford, Ohio Saturday, Dec. 11 to take on Miami University at 11:00 a.m. PST.
