CSUB Wrestling Extends Winning Streak To 34 Over SF State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - CSUB defeated San Francisco State 37-0 in college wrestling action Dec. 12 in the Icardo Center. The Roadrunners' victory was the 34th in a row in the series against the Gators since San Francisco State won the first two duals in the all-time series in 1973 and 1974. CSUB now leads the series 34-2.

"I expected our guys to come out and wrestle strong, and that is exactly what they did," said Roadrunners' Head Coach Mike Mendoza. "San Francisco State is a tough team as they are ranked in the top 20 in Division II, but we were able to come out and perform the way I thought we were capable of."

The dual began at heavyweight where David Morgan posted a 6-2 decision over Anthony Gonzalez. The lightweight were up next where Frank Lomas defeated Pierre Bondoc at 125 pounds. Jose Mendoza shutout Brian Tharp 6-0 at 133.

In a match that featured the Gators' lone nationally ranked wrestler, CSUB's Elijah Nacita charted a 3-0 decision over Naveed Bagheri at 141 pounds. John Cardena took home a 6-2 victory over Dylan Phillipy at 149 before Andrew Balch earned the first major decision of the day for the Roadrunners, 16-5, against Nick Escalera in their 157-pound bout.

Trevor Hall recorded his second pin of the year, sticking Isaiah Jimenez 2:44 into the 165-pound match. Joey Granata defeated Gene Choi 10-0 at 174. Granata earned the riding time bonus point by keeping Choi on the mat for 4:01 of the seven minute contest.

Troy Goodban earned an 11-2 major decision over Zach Jimenez at 184 before Riley Orozco concluded the meet with a 4-4 victory over Andrew Reggi in their 197-pound contest. CSUB earned the bonus point for riding time in all nine of the matches which went to a decision.

The Roadrunners return to the mats Dec. 19 at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev.
