CORVALLIS, Ore. – Despite a late come–back attempt, the CSUB women's basketball team dropped its second game of the season, falling to Oregon State 68–59 on Tuesday night.
CSUB (6–2) and Oregon State (5–2) exchanged baskets through the first half as neither team led by more than four points through the first ten minutes. Senior guard Britney McGee (Bakersfield, Calif./Univ. of Albany) hit two from behind the arc in the first three minutes to set the offensive tone early for the Roadrunners and would go on to score the first seven points of the game for the 'Runners. Oregon State freshman guard Alyssa Martin matched McGee's early point total to keep the game close. After being tied at 21 points apiece with five minutes remaining in the half, Oregon State went on a 7–0 run to take a 36–28 lead into the break.
After trailing at the half for just the second time all season, CSUB remained cold from the field as it missed its first three attempts of the second half. Oregon State took advantage of the Roadrunners' missed attempts and went on another 7–0 run to jump out to a 14–point lead early in the final half. Courtesy of a full–court press that created four Oregon State turnovers, CSUB managed to cut the Beavers' lead to six with five minutes to go. Behind five–points from sophomore guard Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) the 'Runners pulled to within four in the final four minutes. Oregon State, however, stayed consistent from the free–throw line, making six down the stretch to secure the 68–59 win.
The Roadrunners shot just 31.4% (22–70) from the field while Oregon State went 23–54 (42.6%).
McGee finished the night with 13 points and five rebounds while Williams finished with a team–leading 17 points. Senior guard Breana Fields (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) added 13 points and junior forward Jana Smith (Tehachapi, Calif./Tehachapi HS) led the team in rebounding with seven.
The Roadrunners stay on the road for their fifth–consecutive game as they travel to Miami, Fla. to take on Florida International University on Dec. 3 at 6:00 p.m. EST/3:00 p.m. PST.
