Roadrunners Drop Dual to Arizona State

LOS ANGELES – Despite strong performances from seniors Matt Parsonage and Chad McKenzie, the CSUB men's swimming team lost its first meet of the season as it dropped a dual to Arizona State, 162–127, on Friday.

Senior Jay Jones led all CSUB swimmers on the day as he was the only 'Runner to claim two individual events. Jones won both the 200 butterfly (1:53.25) and 200 breaststroke (2:10.25) while also turning in a second–place finish in the 100 butterfly (51.53).

Matt Parsonage (Durban, South Africa/Limestone College) won the 100 butterfly with an impressive time of 50.84 as well as finished second in the 100 breaststroke (57.65) and third in the 50 freestyle (21.54).

Chad McKenzie (Durban, South Africa/Limestone College) claimed the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.96. Parsonages' time in the 100 butterfly and McKenzie's time in the 100 breaststroke are among the top–30 fastest times in Division I so far this season.

Junior Chris Pipes (Fresno, Calif./Merced College) claimed the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.68 and finished a close second in the 200 freestyle (1:44.62).

Distance swimmer Garrett Hubbard (Granada Hills, Calif./Bishop Alemany) capped off the meet by winning the 400 IM with a time of 4:14.28 while Pipes, McKenzie, Joao Foresto (Marilla, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Kevin Miller (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) combined to win the 200 freestyle relay.

Arizona State actually came into the swimming portion of the swimming & diving dual 32 points ahead of the Roadrunners already. CSUB has no divers to compete in the diving portion, which means that CSUB swimming only fell short of ASU swimming by three points.

Despite the loss, head coach Chris Hansen remains optimistic about the young season. “We swam well today,” Hansen said. “Matt Parsonage and Chad McKenzie swam times good enough for top 30 in Division I at the moment. Jay Jones also swam well. These are good times to take with us to Long Beach next week.”

Up next for the Roadrunners is a trip to Long Beach, Calif. to compete in the Triton Classic Nov. 18 – 20.
