Pena?s Hat Trick Secures Overtime Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -  Before Tuesday's women's soccer match against Hawaii at the Main Soccer Field, CSU Bakersfield women's soccer coach Nicole Van Dyke told her team that when they score at least two goals, they win. It might have taken extra time, but Van Dyke was exactly right.

Sophomore Sam Pena (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield HS) scored three goals including the gamewinner just more than one minute into the second overtime to lead CSUB to a 3-2 overtime victory over Hawaii.

The win improves an incredible run that CSUB is on when scoring at least two goals in a match. Dating back to the 2005 season, the Roadrunners are 24-1-0 when scoring at least two goals, including wins in their last 10 matches. The Roadrunners (4-4-5) also have just one loss in their last eight matches.

Pena's goal scoring prowess meant even more on Tuesday night when the Roadrunners wore pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness. Pena's aunt is a breast cancer survivor and she dedicated her play on Tuesday to her aunt. She certainly gave her aunt something to remember.

Pena opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Daisy Vasquez (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside HS) sent a 40-yard pass over the top of the defense and Pena timed the offside trap perfectly, leaving her one-on-one with Hawaii goalkeeper Kristina Ehrett. Pena had little trouble finishing for the 1-0 lead.

CSUB had the better of the play in the first half while outshooting the Rainbow Wahine 7-3, and the Roadrunners continued that play to start the second half when Pena scored her second. Sarah Gaskins (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) slipped a pass through two Hawaii defenders to once again find Pena alone with Ehrett. This time, Pena curled the ball around Ehrett and inside the far post for the 2-0 lead.

Pena's pair of goals were the only two times CSUB was able to break Hawaii's offside trap. The Roadrunners were whistled for 11 offsides in the match.

Hawaii took over from there, however. The Rainbow Wahine took over the momentum when Skye Shimabukuro scored a spectacular goal above a sprawling CSUB goalkeeper Kym Gause (Manteca, Calif./Modesto JC) when the Roadrunners failed to clear a corner kick. Suddenly the lead was cut in half at 2-1. Hawaii scored the equalizer just seven minutes from full time when Brittani Lum sent a laser free kick from 50 yards into the box where Chelsea Deptula curled a header inside the left post to level the scoreline.

CSUB regained the momentum in overtime and finally converted just after the second extra period began. After a hand ball just outside the box near the left touchline, Tyler Shirk (Monrovia, Calif./Monrovia HS) sent in a cross that bounced in front of the goal before Alexandria Ngo (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento State) settled to Pena who turned and finished for the game winner.

Pena's hat trick now gives her five goals on the season for the team lead.

The Roadrunners will look to stay hot when they hit the road to Omaha, Neb. for an 11 a.m. matchup against Creighton on Saturday.
