SAN FRANCISCO -– The CSUB wrestling team stretched its win streak over San Francisco State to 33 straight with a 25-15 dual victory over their longtime opponent Friday at the Main Gym.
The Roadrunners improve to an even 5-5 in dual competition, while the Gators drop to 4-7 overall.
Beginning with Joey Granata's fall victory at 165 pounds, CSUB reeled off four consecutive wins to build a 19-0 lead before San Francisco State earned its first team points at heavyweight.
Granata pinned SFSU's Ian Wrenn at 4:48 and Trevor Hall followed with a pin of his own at 174 pounds. Mike Larson squeaked out a 3-2 decision over Zach Jimenez at 184 pounds and Riley Orozco pushed his dual unbeaten streak to 7-0 with an 11-3 major decision against Vince Bordi at 197 pounds.
The Gators' Steve Franklin, the No. 8 ranked heavyweight in the most recent Division II poll, earned a 7-3 decision over CSUB's David Morgan, but the Roadrunners' Miguel Comparan came up with a big 6-4 win at 125 pounds to push the Roadrunner lead back to 19.
San Francisco took the 133 pound match by forfeit, Ben Locket beat CSUB's Erik Martinez 16-6 and Josh Nolan decisioned John Cardenas 3-2 at 141 pounds and 149 pounds, respectively.
Andrew Balch closed out the dual on a solid note for the Roadrunners, earning a 2-0 decision against Isiah Jimenez at 157 pounds.
“As a team, the guys wrestled pretty well,” said Head Assistant Coach Mike Mendoza. “At at 125's, Miguel wrestled really well. It was great to have him step up and have a good match.”
