Women Capture Two Wins; Men Hit High Marks at NAU

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The CSUB track and field teams put together a solid season–opening competition at Northern Arizona University on a day where everyone was glad the meet was being held indoors. Heavy winter storms caused the Friday Night Challenge to be moved to Saturday at the J.L. Walkup Skydome.

A pair of wins highlighted the day on the women's side. Senior Sheena Cooper took the title in the 60 meter dash, finishing in 7.71. Cooper also ran a solid 25.85 in the 200, a mark that better her times from all of last season. In the 3,000 meters, junior Casey Glassey won with a time of 11:31.04. Sophomore Judith Mata ran a personal best 12:30.59, finishing two spots behind Glassey in the 3,000. Sophomore Princess Watts ran a 1:00.39, just .15 seconds off a personal record in the 400 meter dash.

On the men's side, junior Michael Davis ran the team's fastest 60 meter dash, placing second in 6.86. Junior Ryan Nichols, who placed fifth in the 60 meters, ran 6.90, just .01 seconds off his personal best. Derek Kasselstrand had a personal record in the shot put, placing third with a heave of 46–11.5. Junior Alex Haver tied his personal best in the high jump, placing second with a clearance of 6–4.75.

“I was really happy with our performance today,” Head Coach Alan Collatz said. “Down the line I think we had some very good performances. Our sprinters had very good days. I thought Sheena Cooper's win was great. On our men's side, Michael Davis and Ryan Nichols had really strong days.”

CSUB will return to Flagstaff next Saturday, Jan. 30, for the Mountain T's Invitational.
