Women?s Soccer Falls to Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. -
The CSUB women's soccer team fell behind midway through the first half and were unable to comeback Sunday evening, falling to the Fresno State Bulldogs, 2–0, at Bulldog Stadium. The loss drops the 'Runners to an even 4–4–0 while the Bulldogs improved to 1–5.

Fresno State got on the board first as Claudia Cardenas capitalized on a failed clear in the 28th minute. A blocked shot bounced just inside the Roadrunners' box and Cardenas had an open path to the goal, beating sophomore Kym Gause (Manteca/Modesto JC) to the right post.

In the 36th minute, the Bulldogs' Callie Hancock outran the CSUB defense on a breakaway and scored her first goal of the season.

In the second half, each team had scoring opportunities but neither were able to capitalize. CSUB finished the game with six shots to Fresno State's 17. Much of the Roadrunners' offensive attack was hampered by offsides calls, which CSUB was whistled for eight times. Gause finished with eight saves. Junior Denise Hernandez (Tulare/Fresno City College) finished with two shots to lead the team.

“Falling behind early just put us in a hole tonight,” said Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. “I thought we worked hard to try and get back into it but were just unlucky on a few situations. We just have to refocus for next weeks games beginning on Thursday.”

CSUB returns to the Main Soccer Field on Thursday evening as the Roadrunners take on the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at 7 p.m. For ticket information, call (661) 654–BLUE!
