No. 16 'Runners Upset No. 6 Spartans; Beat Conference Foe Sonoma State


SANTA CLARA, Calif. - A late goal by Shannon McKenzie lifted the No. 16 CSUB water polo team to the biggest upset victory in program history, defeating No. 6 San Jose State, 12-11, Sunday at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara University. The 'Runners also picked up a win in the afternoon session against WWPA foe Sonoma State, 8-7. CSUB is now 19-12 on the season and 9-3 in conference action. The team's 19 victories ties last season's win total.

Becky Seelos scored twice in the first quarter as CSUB fell behind 5-4 after the first eight minutes of action. It was a different story in the second as the 'Runners were held scoreless as San Jose State increased its lead to 8-4. In the third, Seelos scored just over a minute in as CSUB scored five in the quarter to pull within two, 11-9. Petra Koudelkova would bring the game within one, 11-10, with a goal with 4:09 remaining in the game. With the game clock dipping under two minutes, Katherine Gillett found the back of the net for the first time of the game to tie the score at 11-11. Twenty-two seconds later, CSUB drew a Spartan ejection which lead to a man-up advantage for the 'Runners. After a quick timeout, it was Shannon McKenzie's turn to score her first goal of the game, putting the 'Runners ahead with 1:25 remaining. The Spartans would call timeout but were unable to catch CSUB who's defense held strong to pick up the upset victory. Koudelkova and Seelos each had had tricks while Alyson Moss and Amanda Ortiz each had a pair. McKenzie and Gillett each had one goal in the victory. Veronica Campbell had 10 blocks in goal.

Against Sonoma State, CSUB fell behind 3-0 before rebounding with six goals in the second quarter to lead at the break, 6-3. Things got interesting late as the Seawolves tied the game with 1:30 remaining in regulation, 7-7. But C.J. Longeuay provided the 'Runners with another timely goal as she scored with 1:12 remaining to give CSUB the win. Ortiz had three goals for CSUB and McKenzie had a pair. Moss, Koudelkova and Longeuay each had one. Campbell recorded her second 10-block performance of the day to pick up the victory.

"This was a good win for us," said Head Coach Jason Gall. "To go in and beat a top-10 program like San Jose State they way we did with a shutout in the fourth quarter really helps our confidence going into our home stretch of the season. Right now we are gearing up for the WWPA Championship so these wins will give us some momentum as we keep working towards our goal."

CSUB will take a weekend off before returning to action on April 18. The 'Runners will visit Cal State East Bay at noon before heading to Berkley, Calif., to face Cal at 5 p.m.
