Roadrunners Conclude Most Successful Season in Program History With Win

SANTA CLARA, Calif. ? The CSUB water polo team concluded its most successful season to date, defeating Sonoma State Sunday afternoon, 9-8, at the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Tournament to take third place. The Roadrunners finish the season with a 22-14 overall record and were 12-4 in conference play. Prior to this season, CSUB had never finished higher than fourth place in the tournament.

The second-seeded 'Runners had to fight off a hard-charging Seawolves team who had earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament. CSUB built a 9-4 lead as Amanda Ortiz scored with 1:58 remaining in the third quarter. However, it was all Sonoma State after that, scoring four times in the final quarter to pull within one, 9-8. But the Roadrunner defense held strong and survived a furious last second rally to hold on for the victory.

Ortiz scored three times in her final collegiate game. Freshman Shannon McKenzie also added three goals. Kaitlin Torres had a pair of strikes and Alyson Moss added one. In goal, Veronica Campbell had eight blocks, two in every quarter.

Campbell and Ortiz earned first-team all-tournament honors while Moss was named to the second team.

This concludes the 2009 CSUB water polo season.
