Water Polo Earns No. 2 Seed in WWPA Tournament; Looks For NCAA DI Bid

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The No. 14 CSUB water polo team will be the No. 2 seed at the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Tournament this weekend in Santa Clara, Calif., as announced by the league office Monday morning. The Roadrunners, who finished the regular season with a 20-13 overall record, will look to improve on their 10?3 conference mark this weekend and hopefully give the school its first NCAA Division I National Championship team bid.

No. 7 seed UC Santa Cruz (13?16, 3?6 WWPA) will take on No. 10 seed Cal State San Bernardino (10?22, 2?10 WWPA) at 1:20 p.m. on Friday. The winner of that game will face the Roadrunners at 6:40 p.m. Friday. CSUB did not face the Banana Slugs this season but hold the all?time series lead, 19?2. The two teams last faced one another in 2008 with CSUB winning, 8?6. The ?Runners beat the Coyotes, 13?6, earlier this season at the Loyola Marymount Invitational as Becky Seelos, Petra Koudelkova and Amanda Ortiz all recorded hat tricks while Veronica Campbell had seven saves before being relieved by Megan Wetherbee midway through. CSUB leads the all?time series against CSUSB, 13?5.

The only team ranked higher than the Roadrunners is the lone opponent in the draw that CSUB did not defeat this season. Loyola Marymount, the preseason favorite, finished a perfect 10?0 in WWPA action, with two wins coming at the hands of the ?Runners. The Lions finished the season with a 22?7 overall record, winning 15 of their last 18 contests. CSUB has never beaten Loyola Marymount in 16 previous meetings.

The championship match is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. with the winner earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I National Championship Tournament, which will be held on May 8?10 in College Park, Md. Should the Roadrunners be victorious, they will become the first CSUB team sport to advance to an NCAA Division I Championship. Both wrestling and water polo became an NCAA Division I sport prior to the rest of the department and therefore are not held to the transition waiting period for DI championships.
