No. 14 'Runners Split Final Day of Regular Season Action

BERKLEY, Calif. -
The No. 14 CSUB water polo team concluded its 2009 regular season by splitting a pair of matches Saturday afternoon. The 'Runners beat WWPA foe Cal State East Bay, 19-13, in the first game but fell to No. 5 ranked Cal in the evening game, 15-10. CSUB finishes the regular season with a 20-13 overall mark and were 10-3 in WWPA action.

Against Cal State East Bay, CSUB jumped out to an 11-6 halftime advantage and would extend the advantage to eight in the fourth quarter, 16-8. Amanda Ortiz led the offensive attack with a season-high of eight goals. Katherine Gillett had three while Shannon McKenzie, Kaitlin Torres and Alyson Moss each had a pair. Veronica Campbell had 14 blocks in goal. Ortiz drew four ejections and one five-meter penalty shot. Petra Koudelkova, who had one goal, drew two penalty shots.

"We played very well against East Bay," Head Coach Jason Gall said. "After the first quarter, our defense looked very good. Amanda had a great game for us with eight goals."

Against the No. 5 ranked Golden Bears of Cal, Ortiz would score two goals before picking up her third ejection with 2:16 in the second quarter. With the loss of one of their top defenders, the 'Runners had to regroup and still managed to give Cal a good run. Alyson Moss had three goals and Becky Seelos had two. Koudelkova and Torres each had a goal. Also making her way on to the offensive side of the scoresheet was Campbell who scored her first goal late in the fourth quarter. She also had five blocks in goal for the 'Runners.

"This was a good game for us," Gall said. "Even with Amanda going off early, our team stepped up and really played well. They had to work hard to keep the game close. I think we are ready for conference next week and to reach 20 wins is a great accomplishment."

The Roadrunners will await their seeding in next weekend's WWPA tournament which should be announced on Monday. CSUB will play Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif., in hopes of securing the school's first NCAA Division I team championship bid.
