Roadrunners Split With Roadrunners At UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas ? The CSUB softball team opened its three-game series at UT-San Antonio with a split Saturday afternoon, losing game one 3-1 before bouncing back for its own 3-1 win in the nightcap at Roadrunner Field.

Junior second baseman Kristen Archuleta swung the big bat for CSUB, collecting four hits on the day, including a 3-for-4 effort in game two. Junior pitcher Shawna Truan scattered five hits over eight innings to pick up her ninth win of the season.

UTSA (23-22 overall) scored all of its runs in the first game in a three-run fourth inning. Starting pitcher Emily Humpal was her own best friend, igniting the inning with a two-run homer.

CSUB (25-21) pulled one run back in the sixth inning. Jaimey Kleinsmith led off with a single. Chelsey Bell pinch ran and stole second before scoring on a throwing error. CSUB brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning after a Jill McClelland two-out double, but couldn't tie the game.

Game two proved to be the same story, but with a happier ending for Bakersfield fans. CSUB stranded six runners on base through the first three innings but couldn't push a run across.

UTSA, meanwhile, used a home run from Laura Little to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. It proved to be the only mistake Truan would make, as she allowed just two more UTSA base runners to reach scoring position the rest of the game.

CSUB finally solved UTSA starter Dayne Holmes in the seventh inning. Brittany Johnson led off with a pinch-hit single. Nette Puente pinch ran for Johnson and sped around to third on Kelli Bailey's single up the middle. She scored to force extra innings two batters later on Justeen Maeva's suicide squeeze.

Shortstop Heather Veitch played the hero's role in the eighth inning, lacing a two-run double down the right field line for the game-winning runs.

The Roadrunners and Roadrunners will close their three-game series with a Sunday game. First pitch is scheduled for Noon CDT.
