WOODWARD, Calif. - Sophomore Ryan Nichols won the long jump as the CSUB track and field teams competed at the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational Friday and Saturday in Woodward, Calif. Nichols cleard a mark of 23 feet to win the open portion of the Invitational. He also ran a personal best of 22.31 in the 200 meter dash. The competitive weekend field included teams from Texas A&M, USC, Washington State, Cal, Utah State, Stanford, UC Riverside, Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge and the host Bruins.
The women's team had five personal best performances over the weekend. Katherine Patrick took almost two seconds off her season-best time in the 1,500 meters, running 5:00.42. Sheena Cooper won her heat of the 200 meter dash in a time of 26.04. April Cacuyog broke the minute barrier in the 400 meter dash, running 59.97. Judith Mata improved her 5,000 meter time by over five seconds, running 20:14.20.
Derek Johnson placed second in the open hammer throw competition with a mark of 163-10. In the invitational hammer throw, Steve Trojanowski was third with a toss of 186-06. Daniel Hernandez had a personal best in the 400 meter hurdles, with a time of 55.16. Jose Orozco also improved his season-best time running 4:02.77 in the 1,500 meters.
The 'Runners will take a selected group of athletes to the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., while the rest of the team will compete at the APU Invitational in Azusa, Calif., next weekend.
