DAVIS, Calif. - The No. 17 ranked CSUB women's water polo team suffered two setbacks Sunday afternoon at the UC Davis Invitational. The 'Runners dropped a heartbreaking 11-10 sudden victory contest to WWPA rival Santa Clara in the morning before losing to No. 1 ranked Stanford 18-3 in the afternoon. CSUB is now 10-7 on the year and is 4-1 in WWPA action.
Twice in the final quarter, CSUB held leads of three goals against Santa Clara. Senior Petra Koudelkova scored on a penalty shot with 4:17 remaining to give the 'Runners a 9-6 lead with 4:17 to go. But the Broncos scored three unanswered goals including the tying goal with just 11 seconds showing on the clock to force overtime. In the first extra session, Koudelkova was sent off with 42 seconds remaining and Santa Clara took advantage with a strike just 10 seconds later to take a 10-9 lead. In the second overtime, it was senior Amanda Ortiz delivering the equalizer with 1:11 remaining to send the game to a sudden victory period. Unfortunately for the 'Runners, SCU's Meg Zimmerman scored to end the game. Ortiz and Koudelkova each had three goals to pace CSUB offensively. Freshman Shannon McKenzie added two goals of her own. In goal, senior Veronica Campbell had eight blocks.
Against the No. 1 ranked Cardinal, CSUB found itself down 12-0 late in the second period. Freshman Kaitlin Torres scored on a five-meter penalty shot with 59 seconds remaining in the half to put the 'Runners on the board. Classmate Malia Pahoa scored midway through the third period followed less than a minute later by a strike from McKenzie. Campbell had two blocks in the first half before being relieved by freshman Megan Wetherbee who finished the second half with six blocks.
"One of the positive things we can take out of this weekend was that our freshman played pretty strong during our four games," Head Coach Jason Gall said afterward. "They played some pretty important minutes for us and performed against some tough competition. It was good for them to get some experience and they will help add to the talent we already have on the team this year."
The 'Runners return to action on Friday as they head to Irvine to face the Anteaters at 7 p.m. CSUB will then head to Los Angeles to compete in the Loyola Marymount Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. Indiana and Cal State San Bernardino will be the Roadrunners' opponents Saturday followed by Princeton and Cal State Northridge on Sunday.
*Note on the Santa Clara scoresheet that Petra Koudelkova should have been given credit for two goals in the fourth quarter. The score was given to Brittany Berry in the chart and to Amanda Ortiz in the play-by-play.
