SAN JOSE, Calif. ? The CSUB softball team used timely offense in the opener and a strong pitching effort by Shawna Truan in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader at San Jose State, 4-2 and 5-0, Sunday afternoon.
CSUB (10-9 overall) overcame a two-run deficit in the opener with a four-run sixth inning. The Roadrunners completed the sweep on the strength of Truan's three-hit shutout.
Truan's effort was the story of the day as the junior from McArthur tossed her second career shutout while equaling her best-ever effort with a three-hitter. She has not allowed a run in her last 12 1/3 innings.
Her offense supplied her with more than enough support by scoring three times in the second inning. Sophomore catcher Kasie Muro (Tehachapi/Santa Barbara CC) capped the inning by driving in two runs with her first collegiate hit, a single to right field.
The Roadrunners added a pair of insurance runs in the third inning when Kristen Archuleta singled home one run then scored on the throw after Stefanie Frei stole second base in front of her. Truan was in cruise control by that point, retiring 13 of 14 batters down the stretch to silence the Spartans.
In the opener San Jose State starter Deanna Mauer flummoxed CSUB on two hits through the first five innings. RBI singles by Danielle Lyman, Sammy Rodriguez and Brittany Johnson powered the four-run outburst helped Johnson win for the fourth time this season.
Lyman and Kelli Bailey were the only Roadrunners to hit safely in both games Sunday. Lyman finished the day 3-for-7 with a run and an RBI while Bailey had one hit in each game.
CSUB returns to action Monday afternoon when it opens a 15-game homestand with a doubleheader against Utah State at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
