MORAGA, Calif. ? The CSUB softball team continued its struggle to generate runs Sunday afternoon, but it mattered little as junior Shawna Truan tossed a three-hit shutout to defeat Saint Mary's College 1-0 in Moraga.
While CSUB (18-17 overall) scored three or fewer runs for the seventh consecutive game, Truan made Jaimey Kleinsmith's two-out, RBI single in the first inning stand up by tossing her third shutout of the season. She took a no-hitter into at least the fifth inning for the second time this season and finished with her third three-hit or less performance of 2009.
The Roadrunners generated all the offense Truan would need in their first at bats. Kelli Bailey led off the game with a single up the middle then moved to second on Jill McClelland's sacrifice. With two outs, Kleinsmith singled past shortstop and Bailey came home with what proved to be the game-winner.
Saint Mary's (16-16) had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the first when it put runners on the corners via two errors with just one out. But Truan coaxed a pair of groundouts to the drawn-in infield to stifle the rally.
CSUB returns home to host Loyola Marymount in a doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m.
