No. 19 'Runners Down Eagles; Fall to No. 10 Lions in OT Thriller

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The No. 19 CSUB water polo team went 1-1 during the first day of the Roadrunner Invitational II Friday at the Hillman Aquatics Center. The Roadrunners opened the day with a 16-10 victory over Concordia?Irvine as seven different players scored goals. Against No. 10 Loyola Marymount, CSUB fell down by three goals on six times but battled back to force overtime. Despite playing touch, the Lions were able to pull out a 14-13 overtime victory. The Roadrunners are now 14-11 on the year, 5-2 in WWPA action.

Against Concordia-Irvine, Amanda Ortiz opened the game by scoring three of her five total goals in the first quarter as CSUB jumped on the Eagles. Brittany Berry, Kellie Goodwin, Shannon McKenzie, Petra Koudelkova and Kaitlin Torres each had two goals in the winning effort. Becky Seelos had the other CSUB goal. Veronica Campbell started but was relieved in the second quarter by Megan Weatherbee, who finished with five blocks in net.

CSUB knew it was in for a battle against No. 10 LMU. Six times during the game, the Lions built leads of three goals only to watch the Roadrunners climb back into the game. Foul trouble sent Amanda Ortiz to the bench early as she finished with one goal. Needing a player to step up, freshman left-hander McKenzie delivered five big goals for the 'Runners. Down by one with time running out, McKenzie came through with the tying goal with the clock showing just five seconds to play. In the overtime period however, LMU scored late in the first extra period and held on for the 14-13 win. Koudelkova had three goals while Alyson Moss and Torres each added two. In goal, Campbell had 17 blocks including six important saves in the fourth quarter. She left momentarily in the second quarter due to an eye injury.

The Roadrunner Invitational II continues tomorrow at 8 a.m. with a slate of eight games. CSUB will play No. 16 UC San Diego at 9:15 a.m. before taking on Chapman in the final game of the invitational at 4:45 p.m. Both games are WWPA conference matches.
