Truan Dominates In Two-Hitter vs. North Dakota

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB softball team got 13 1/3 innings of red-hot pitching Sunday, but it proved good enough for just a split against visiting North Dakota at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. The Fighting Sioux took game one 2-1 before CSUB rallied to win the nightcap 4-0.

Junior pitcher Shawna Truan continued to shine in game two Sunday. She took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before settling on her first career two-hitter. Truan has allowed just two runs and 11 hits in her last five outings, spanning 31 innings.

Truan's dominance allowed the Roadrunner offense to find its footing. After CSUB scratched out just four hits in the opener, Jill McClelland provided Truan more than enough support with her two-run single in the second inning.

Pinch hitter Brittany Johnson and Kelli Bailey added run-scoring singles in the fifth inning and CSUB cruised to the split.

In the circle, Johnson gave up four singles and a walk as North Dakota brought home the only two runs it would score all day with two outs in the first inning of the opener. She slammed the door after that, allowing just three hits in 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball the rest of the way.

But North Dakota starter Shelly Wolf threw her best game of the season. The Roadrunners rarely hit a ball with authority. The few times CSUB threatened, Wolf made the pitches she needed to to extricate herself from trouble.

CSUB scored its only run in unusual fashion. With two outs in the third inning, McClelland hit a fly ball to the gap in left center. North Dakota left fielder Maggie O'Neal and centerfielder Nicole Puerling collided trying to make the play and the speedy McClelland circled the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

Johnson's strong comeback gave CSUB a chance to rally and the Roadrunners seemed poised to do just that in the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out. But Wolf got Danielle Lyman to ground into a force at the plate and Sammy Rodriguez to ground out to short to end the threat.

Bailey finished the day 5-for-7 and McClelland went 3-for-3 with three RBI. Junior shortstop Heather Veitch matched her career high by going 3-for-4 in the second game.

CSUB returns to the field with a big weekend of home action Mar. 21-22. Saturday renews a rivalry between two of the best teams in NCAA Division II history when Cal State Northridge visits for a doubleheader. Sunday will see powerful UCLA visit Bakersfield for the first time.
