No. 18 'Runners Earn Split at Loyola Marymount Invitational

LOS ANGELES - The No. 18 CSUB women's water polo team went 1-1 during the first day of competition at the Loyola Marymount Invitational on Saturday. The 'Runners lost to No. 19 Indiana, 8-6, in the morning session but rebounded to beat Cal State San Bernardino, 13-6, in the afternoon. CSUB is now 11-9 on the season and 5-1 in WWPA action.

In the first game, the 'Runners jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Ortiz scored two of her three goals in the first quarter and Becky Seelos and Alyson Moss each added a tally. It was a different tale in the second quarter as Indiana stormed back to score four-unanswered goals, tying the game at the break, 4-4. The Hoosiers would get the only tally in the third quarter to take the lead for good on a Jakie Kohli goal. In the fourth, a Katherine Gillett goal would bring the Indiana lead back to 6-5. But the Hoosiers would score two of the game's final three goals to win, 8-6. Veronica Campbell had five saves in goal.

Against San Bernardino in the second game, CSUB found itself tied with the Coyotes, 2-2, midway through the first quarter. But a 9-0 run lifted CSUB to a 13-6 win. Ortiz put together her third-consecutive three-goal performance to lead the Roadrunners. Petra Koudelkova and Becky Seelos each added three goals as well. CSUB forced 12 San Bernardino ejections while committing just nine. Campbell had seven saves before being relieved by Megan Wetherbee midway through.

"We had some problems against Indiana but were able to bounce back and get an important win over San Bernardino," Head Coach Jason Gall said. "Hopefully this win will get us going back in the right direction. We are playing two really good teams tomorrow and we need to play well to win."

The Roadrunners continue action at the Loyola Marymout Invitational tomorrow as they take on Princeton and No. 11 Cal State Northridge.
