BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB softball team got lots of offense--along with healthy doses of pitching and defense--to sweep visiting Temple University 4-3 and 11-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Johnson (6-5) allowed just six hits and one earned run to keep CSUB in the first game. Her offense scored single runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings as the Roadrunners came from behind twice to win.
With the game tied 3-3 and two outs in the sixth inning, Johnson became her own best friend. Pinch-hitting for Nette Puente, Johnson doubled down the leftfield line to drive home Kristen Archuleta with what proved to be the winning run.
In the nightcap, junior pitcher Shawna Truan impressed with her third consecutive strong outing, allowing just one hit over the final 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball to improve to 4-1 on the season. Her offense kicked into overdrive, scoring in all four of its at bats, including a five-run first inning that provided all the support she would need.
Arhculeta continued to break out of her early season slump in a big way. Her three-run home run capped the five-run first in the nightcap. She paced the CSUB attack by going 4-for-6 with four runs, four RBI and her third home run of the season.
Junior third baseman Kelli Bailey also enjoyed a big day, finishing the doubleheader 5-for-8 with two runs, two RBI and her fourth home run of the season. Justeen Maeva (2-for-6) and Stefanie Frei (3-for-5) also hit safely in both games.
CSUB improved to 13-10 with Wednesday's victories. The Roadrunners will continue their 15-game homestand Saturday with a doubleheader against the University of North Dakota.
